GO WILD! with Native Plants Workshop 2025

Registration is required by the school, as seating is limited to 120 people. Please call the Shawano School to register: 715-526-2192 Ext. 3202 Professor Karen Oberhaser will be our featured speaker. Prof. Oberhauser, is the former director of the Arboretum at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and is an internationally renowned conservation biologist and expert on monarch butterflies. She had been chosen as the Arboretum director in 2017 after a national search. As director, she supported the center’s core mission areas of land care, research and education, with an emphasis on science-based participatory programs and community engagement. Also speaking... Justin Kroening from Stone Silo Prairie Gardens , and he'll discuss getting started with native gardens. Justin is an expert in the field and has a successful native plant operation in DePere, WI. Bob Dumke, one of our own Wolf River Wild Ones members, will update all on his success with transforming a landfill using native plants. Neil Diboll, from Prairie Nursery is our main speaker, and will present "Creating Prairie Gardens and Meadows". Neil is a pioneer in the native plant industry and is recognized internationally as an expert in native plant ecology. He has dedicated his life to the propagation of native plants, promoting their benefits and furthering their use in gardens, landscapes and restoration projects.

Abby is the Coordinator for the Timberland Invasives Partnership (TIP) which serves Langlade, Menominee, Oconto, and Shawano Counties. TIP offers a variety of services including invasive species advice & management, species identification, trainings & presentations, and reporting invasive species. Her presentation, "Managing Invasive Plant Species", will provide information on everything you need to know about identifying and controlling invasives.

Ashley Barkow

Ashely has 8 years of experience in the horticulture industry, working at a botanical garden. She has also owned and operated a small business for close to a year that specializes in gardening maintenance and plant design. She has worked in tandem with professionals in the industry to install a native plant bed at NWTC and at the Green Bay Botanical Garden. As well as providing care for native plant beds through her business.

Grace Eide

Grace works with WAMSCO (Waterways Association of Shawano and Menominee Counties) and they specialize in shoreline restoration projects, including native plantings and rain gardens. Their services include restoration quotes, designs/implementation, grant writing, and reporting. In 2023, we successfully completed five native plantings and three rain gardens and assisted with two biobag installations.

Emily Henrigillis

Emily Henrigillis has a background in aquatic ecology and taxonomy. She has worked on lakes in Wisconsin since 2011. Her experience working with shoreline property owners led her down the path of starting The Plant Gal. Emily hopes to help urban, suburban, and waterfront property owners improve their landscape for the waters, our pollinators, and the future. Her love of aquatic plants also lends a hand during point intercept surveys!

Justin owns and operates Stone Silo Prairie Gardens in DePere and is an expert on native plants. He works professionally to promote, educate, and install native landscapes, and is well-known in our area for his quality and expertise.
